Stellar has been around since 2014, built by Jed McCaleb and Joyce Kim as a network meant to move value quickly and cheaply, closer to how email moves a message than how a bank wire moves money.
It runs on the Stellar Consensus Protocol, a system that settles transactions in a few seconds without any mining. That speed is part of why Stellar became a popular rail for remittances and stablecoin transfers, with Circle issuing USDC directly on the network and MoneyGram using it to let people cash digital dollars in and out around the world.
Selling XLM is really just closing the loop on that same idea. Instead of moving value into the network, you are moving it back out into a currency you can spend right away, whether that is covering a bill, topping up savings, or simply taking profit.
Because the network settles fast and fees are close to nothing, converting Stellar back into fiat does not have to be a slow or expensive process. For a lot of sellers, that is the whole appeal: get in and out without losing time or money to the process itself.
